Nicole Kidman Considering A Role In Aquaman

Splashing towards an April shoot date, director James Wan and the Aquaman team are starting to lock down more cast. They now have Nicole Kidman and The Get Down 's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in talks for roles. Kidman, assuming she signs, is looking to play Aquaman's mother, Atlanna. A member of the royal family in Atlantis, she escaped her kingdom for an adventure on the surface, and ended up falling for a lighthouse keeper and giving birth to Jason Momoa's hero. As for Abdul-Mateen, the man who plays Cadillac on the Netflix series is in line to be Black Manta, a scheming villain and one of Aquaman's main foes who was first introduced in 1967. It's the latest big film role for the actor, who narrowly missed out on the role on Lando in the Han Solo spin-off but will be seen in Baywatch and The Greatest Showman. The pair will join a cast that already boasts Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as scientist and advisor Vulko and Patrick Wilson as Orm, Aq

Leonardo DiCaprio On For Crime Thriller The Black Hand

Image
A man who seemingly never found a book he didn't want to adapt, Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to star in yet another movie drawn from a tome. And, as is his (Appian) way these days, he'll also produce crime thriller The Black Hand . Stephan Talty's book chronicles the real-life story of Joe Petrosino, a driven NYPD cop who made it his life's mission to go after the dangerous gang spreading a kidnapping ring from Italy to America in the late 1890s. The Black Hand (for such a mark was their calling card) were ruthless and inspired fear among the local Italian immigrant population, but Petrosino won the citizens' trust and created a network of informers. He sent many of the gang back to Italy or locked them up, but was finally lured to his death, leaving behind a wife and children. DiCaprio is working with The Gotham Group and Paramount to bring the story to the screen, and he's on the hunt for a writer to do Petrosino's life justice.

Reuben Abati: Donald Trump and the Muslim World

Image
I am not a fan of Donald Trump, the incumbent President of the United States. I didn’t stand with him. I stood with her- Hillary Clinton- in the last US Presidential election. No other election in recent American history has been more international in terms of interest and emotional involvement. Trump’s election even divided the Nigerian middle class. A majority of Christians in Nigeria stood with Donald Trump. They liked his anti-Muslim rhetoric, and in a country where religion is such a volatile subject and the Christian community feels as if it is under siege from radical Islamic extremism, it was easy for a category of Nigerians to see Trump’s politics being in sync with their own fears and expectations. Pro-secessionist, Biafran and Christian protesters in the South East also supported Trump. On his Inauguration Day, they organized a rally; some of them were killed, in the process, by Nigerian security agents. It is always so easy to read American politics int

President Donald Trump has fired the US Attorney General for not Defending his Immigration Orders | White House calls her “weak”

According to several reports, President Trump has fired the US attorney general for defiance of his Immigration Orders. Telegraph reports that Trump fired acting Attorney General Sally Yates after she ordered Justice Department lawyers to stop defending the president’s controversial immigration orders. Sally Yates, who had been appointed by former President Obama, said she was “not convinced that the executive order is lawful”. A couple of hours ago she had sent a letter to the Justice Department Lawyers saying ““I am responsible for ensuring that the positions we take in court remain consistent with this institution’s solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right. At present, I am not convinced that the defence of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities.” The White House press office said in a statement that Yates “has betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citiz

Colombian government and rebels announce cocaine crop plan

The Farc rebel group relied on cocaine production to fund its insurgency, and controlled much of the industry. They will also be offered loans and guidance to plant alternatives such as fruit trees and cacao. The crop substitution programme was agreed as part of Colombia's peace accord, which was finally ratified in December. Amazon Reef: First images of new coral system

The first pictures of a huge coral reef system discovered in the Amazon last year have been released by environmental campaigners. The Amazon Reef is a 9,500 sq km (3,600 sq miles) system of corals, sponges and rhodoliths, Greenpeace says. The reef is almost 1,000 km (620 miles) long, and is located where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Oil drilling could start in the area if companies obtain permits from the Brazilian government, the group warns . "This reef system is important for many reasons, including the fact that it has unique characteristics regarding use and availability of light, and physicochemical water conditions," researcher Nils Asp, from the Federal University of Para, said in a statement. "It has a huge potential for new species, and it is also important for the economic well-being of fishing communities along the Amazonian coastal zone." Can 'super coral' save the Great Barrier Reef? Scientists were surpri

US travel ban: Diplomats 'preparing dissent memo'

Image
Dozens of US diplomats around the world are set to formally criticise President Donald Trump's immigration restrictions, US media report. A "dissent cable" has been drafted for senior state department officials. The White House said those complaining should "get with the programme". In the wake of Mr Trump's ban on nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries, ex-President Barack Obama has spoken out against discrimination "based on faith or religion". In a statement his spokesman, Kevin Lewis, said Mr Obama was also "heartened" by the level of engagement taking place across the country. 'Get with it or go' The draft text of the dissent cable seen by the BBC says that the immigration restrictions will not make the US safer, are un-American and will send the wrong message to the Muslim world. Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown Starring In Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

Image
She made a name for herself going up against a weird creature in last year's TV hit Stranger Things. For her first movie role, Millie Bobby Brown is graduating to a monster of a whole new scale: she'll star in Godzilla: King Of The Monsters. Michael Dougherty , who had been at work on the script with co-writer Zach Shields, was confirmed last week as the director of the sequel to 2014's Godzilla . We don't yet know what will happen in the new movie, but given the creature's warmer reception after fighting off mutant beasties in the previous outing, we'd imagine the big Z will be back to battle some more humungous competition. As for Brown? Details on her character have yet to be released. The new film is part of Legendary's planned giant monster movies, which includes the incoming Kong: Skull Island , landing here on 10 March. King Of Monsters has been scheduled for 22 March 2019, while Godzilla Vs. Kong stomps in on 22c May 2020. We ca

Image

2017 Oscar Winners Predicted

Image
If Leo was last year’s big Oscar news, this year’s is La La Land tying with Titanic and All About Eve for the most nominations of all time – 14, if you’re asking. So, before you decide to base your final Oscar predictions on the Golden Globe winners (Best Supporting Actor winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson wasn’t even nominated by the Academy), well, don’t. For, if you take a closer look at the science behind the Academy Awards , you’ll know that matching the Golden Globes to the Oscars is about as simple as Leo’s hunt for that second golden statue. Here’s how we see it playing out in 2017: 1. Manchester By The Sea won’t win Best Picture Kenneth Lonergan’s family weepy may have Casey Affleck leading the Best Actor race (only Denzel Washington is nipping at his heels), but the film itself won’t fare as well in the Oscars’ biggest category. Why? Because you need an editing nomination to win the grand prize. (This also dashes the Best Picture chances of Hidden Figures , Lio

Protest Across US Airports As Trump Bans Muslim Majority Nations

Image
President Donald Trump has ordered a four- month ban on all refugees entering the US. He also singled out refugees from Syria as barred from entering the country indefinitely, or until he himself decides they are allowed in. No visas will be issued to immigrants from seven mainly-Muslim nations including Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen for 90 days. "I'm establishing new vetting measures to keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the United States of America. Don't want them here," Trump said earlier on Friday at the Pentagon. "We only want to admit those into our country who will support our country and love deeply our people," he said. There were reports of Syrian families who have spent up to two years being vetted for a visa left stranded at the airport having sold all their possessions.

Elsewhere, Zootropolis / topia scored again, with Disney's Clark Spencer picking up another award. On both film and TV it was good to be in the O.J. Simpson history business as O.J.: Made In America won the documentary film prize, while The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story nabbed the long-form TV prize.
