Xavi names the one player who he thinks is the ideal signing for Barcelona

With the club football season kicking off this weekend, Europe's biggest teams would have hoped that their transfer business would be done by now.

In reality, no squad is in a perfect condition and there's no doubt deals will be done until deadline day on August 31.

Of course, most clubs have already been active in the summer window and a number of Premier League sides have made statement signings.

Manchester United have landed Romelu Lukaku from Everton for £75 million, making him the most expensive move in England so far.

Arsenal have also been busy and have broken their previous transfer record fee, bringing in Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon for just under £53 million.

Across London, defending champions Chelsea have also brought in a striker, signing Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid for around £70 million.

Despite him joining both Tiemoue Bakayoko and Antonio Rudiger at Stamford Bridge, manager Antonio Conte still wants more signings.

He's desperate to bring in a wing-back and another midfielder and appears to be getting more and more agitated at the lack of any deals since Morata.

But at least he's made three big signings already. Spare a thought for Ernesto Valverde, who has had a very quiet summer at Barcelona.

His biggest addition has been Nelson Semedo from Benfica, but after selling Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain for an incredible £198 million surely he will expect a huge name to come in.

Of course, the Spanish side have been linked with moves for Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho and AS Monaco's Kylian Mbappe, but have been unsuccessful so far this summer.

With time running out, the club need to make a signing soon if they're to have enough depth to challenge for La Liga and the Champions League next year.

Catalan legend Xavi believes he knows exactly who the best signing would be for Barca and it's not Mbappe or Coutinho.

"Marco Verratti would be ideal for Barcelona", the 37-year-old told Goal.

He also suggested that Ivan Rakitic is doing brilliantly at the club and that some people don't realise how important he is.

“Rakitic is clearly doing a brilliant job, I think he has adapted well to Barcelona’s football. Maybe he is doing a less obvious job that people don’t value as much."

But Xavi did add that PSG's midfielder could do just as well in the role should he move to the Nou Camp.

"Verratti also has the talent to play in Barcelona, without a doubt. I also think he is the type of player I was."

With just three weeks until the transfer window slams shut, Barca will need to act quickly if they are to sign any one of these three players, who have all reportedly been made targets this summer.
